Local Science. Global Impact.
At WatchSpotter™ our hearts are rooted in science and sustainability. As a company dedicated to providing a global impact through local science, we have committed to aligning our corporate, as well as our personal goals to those defined by the United Nations (UN) Goals for Sustainable Development. Ultimately our corporate plan is to align with all 17 UN goals, as we feel these are all critical to the health of the planet and principles that we as individuals should strive to accomplish. With much consideration, we are targeting four Sustainable Development Goals to focus our efforts on this year. Each subsequent year, we will build upon our sustainability platform by adding additional UN goals to our own.
Recycle Paper, Glass, and Aluminum.
We were able to implement this goal in a snap. Our founder has long been a dedicated advocate for recycling. Surpassing the recycling guidelines that the UN suggests, we recycle all cardboard, packing materials, and other items we can, we have a companywide “don’t print unless you have to” policy, and any paper that we use, we try to reuse and then recycle. We are committed to cutting down on plastics by always using reusable water bottles, coffee cups and even having reusable cutlery sets at the ready in our vehicle. Our founder, Anne Sleeman, also enjoys spreading the word through volunteering with local environmental organizations.
Waste Less Food and Support Local Farmers. The team at WatchSpotter™ feels that we all must do our part to support local farms and focus on eating locally sourced products. At the onset of incorporation, the Founder of WatchSpotter™ provided seed money to a local farm- the same farm that they purchase almost all their produce from. The seed money helped local farmers-buy seed. Purchasing food from local sources helps to reduce carbon gas emissions as there is no need for trucks to transport the produce over miles and miles of highway. The food we purchase is fresher. Because the food is so fresh, we have naturally experienced less food waste. This has had an amazing trickle-down effect-wherein the WatchSpotter™ team developed a new “eat what we have” attitude before heading out to the store.
Avoid Plastic Bags to Keep the Oceans Clean.
Ocean conservancy and sustainability are part of what makes us who we are. We have eliminated single-use plastic and have committed to no plastic straws, stirrers, or grocery bags. If one happens into the office-it is always repurposed and/or recycled. With a love of SCUBA and all things marine- the founder has been a steward of ocean health for decades. She brings that love and commitment to the entire team. At WatchSpotter™ we take this one step further by only eating sustainably harvested seafood.
